WWF-UCO, Partner CSOs Participate at the EAPCE 2019

Last week the WWF-UCO Energy, Climate and Extractives Programme Coordinator and the Extractives Manager participated in the 9th East African Petroleum Conference and Exhibition (EAPCE) in Mombasa.

This was alongside other eight Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) representatives sponsored by WWF to participate in the regional bi-annual event.

The week started with a two-day CSO pre-conference side event in which WWF and CSO partner work was discussed and policy positions generated to facilitate CSO active participation in influencing technocrats and politicians from East Africa Countries and oil companies.

According to the Extractives Manager, Ivan Amanigaruhanga, “All across the various sessions, CSO participation was appreciated, products of our work disseminated and a CSO statement with policy demands on aspects of environmental and social concern was shared.”

A total of three thematic presentations on environmental monitoring, land acquisition and forest conservation were presented by our CSO partners.

The key highlight of the event was Uganda’s official launch of the second round of licensing for oil exploration, which covers five blocks including the hotly contested Nagji block in South Western Uganda.
