WWF, UWA Flag off Glacier Monitoring on Rwenzori Mountains

WWF Uganda, in partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), has dispatched a team of 5 rangers to the peak of Mount Stanley to measure glacier levels. The expedition, which set off this week, aims to gather critical data that will guide future conservation and tourism interventions in the Rwenzori landscape.

According to the Manager Wildlife and Protected Areas at WWF, Keneth Tumwebaze, the findings from this mission are expected to shape long-term conservation efforts in the Rwenzori Mountains.

“This is crucial in understanding the status of the glaciers and the rate at which they might be changing. This will contribute to designing strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change on this fragile ecosystem,” he said.

Chief Warden George Busingye noted that the Rwenzori glaciers are a heritage that must be safeguard and this mission is part of UWA’s commitment to preserving this unique ecosystem for generations to come.

“We were trained in skills on how to collect date and provided with equipment… The drone that WWF donated to us shall help to gives us an aerial perspective that helps capture accurate glacier size and changes over time,” said Kabugo Syilli-leading for the drone operations.

WWF Uganda with funding from Hempel Foundation through WWF-Denmark is implementing the “Restoration for a Resilient Rwenzori” project in the five district around Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
