WWF Denmark Delegation in support visit to Uganda
WWF in Uganda hosted Cora Mezger and Marie Mortensen from WWF Denmark on a monitoring visit to the Murchison- Semiliki Landscape. The visit focused on assessing the progress of the Natural Forest Regeneration for Enhanced Carbon Absorption in the Albertine Rift (FRECAR) program, funded by VELUX.
The 20-year initiative is aimed at restoring degraded forests and protecting natural ones in Uganda's Albertine Rift. The program's primary objectives are to; Enhance carbon sequestration, improve biodiversity and Boost community livelihoods
By achieving these goals, the program aims to capture one million verified carbon units (VCUs) through tree planting, agroforestry systems, and sustainable practices. This will not only contribute to Uganda's climate goals but also generate income for local communities through carbon credits and alternative businesses, ultimately reducing pressure on natural forests.
During their visit, Cora and Marie had the opportunity to tour various project sites, including Restoration sites in Kagombe Central Forest Reserve, Livelihood interventions, such as Apiaries, goat and cow rearing, coffee and banana farms and related Agroforestry sites
According to Phillip Kihumuro, the program manager, the visit aimed to not only monitor progress but also gather insights to inform the program's strategy, design, and implementation. The visit provided valuable opportunities for the WWF Denmark team to engage with local communities and project beneficiaries, gaining a deeper understanding of the project's impact and potential for future growth.
