WWF Hands Over DFDPs to Districts Around Rwenzori Mountains to Boost Restoration and Resilience

WWF Uganda, under the Restoration for a Resilient Rwenzori project funded by the Hempel Foundation through WWF-Denmark, has officially handed over District Forestry Development Plans (DFDPs) to the Local Government leadership of four districts surrounding Rwenzori Mountains National Park (RMNP). These include Bunyangabu, Kabarole, Ntoroko, and Bundibugyo.

The event, held in Fort Portal, was presided over by Hon. James Mugarama Ategeka, Chairperson LCV of Bunyangabu District, who commended WWF Uganda and partners for the critical support towards sustainable forest management. He pledged the district’s commitment to ensure that the plans are put into action.

“Forests are at the heart of our livelihoods and climate resilience. With these development plans, we now have a clear and practical roadmap. As district leadership, we commit to popularizing and implementing these strategies to the fullest,” said Hon. James Mugarama Ategeka.

The District Forestry Development Plans are strategic tools designed to guide districts in restoring degraded landscapes, sustainably managing forest resources, and integrating forest-based solutions into local development planning. They were developed through participatory processes involving district technical staff, community representatives, and forestry experts.

According to Paul Mulondo, Coordinator for Forestry and Biodiversity at WWF Uganda, these plans are part of a broader effort to build climate-resilient landscapes in the Rwenzori region.

“The DFDPs provide a structure through which districts can prioritize, finance, and monitor restoration and forest governance interventions. This handover is not just symbolic—it marks a transfer of tools for action, accountability, and long-term sustainability,” said Paul Mulondo.

This handover builds on WWF Uganda’s earlier efforts, where similar plans were developed and delivered to Kasese, Rubirizi, Rukungiri, Mitooma, Rubanda, and Kabale districts among others, with the goal of strengthening decentralized forest governance in key ecological regions.

The Restoration for a Resilient Rwenzori project continues to empower district and community structures to protect vital forest landscapes, reduce degradation, and create alternative, sustainable livelihoods for surrounding communities.
