During the discussions, the UCU administration welcomed the challenge.
“This is an opportunity for our students to show case their innovations and solutions to Uganda’s environmental degradation challenges. We are positive that we shall win this competition”, stated Dr Miria Agunyo, the Head of Department for Engineering and Environment.
WWF and UCU also discussed the need for an MOU to be put in place to guide all other engagements between the two institutions for stronger partnerships and collaborations
Uganda Christian University is one of the four universities that will take part in the Earth Hour University challenge. The activity is aimed at mobilizing young conservationists to provide solutions to the climate change challenges in the country. Others include; Makerere University, Kyambogo University and Kampala International University (KIU).
The university challenge is one of the activities scheduled for this year’s Earth Hour campaign. The activity is aimed at mobilizing youth to take part in finding solutions to the challenges of environmental sustainability, incorporate principles of sustainability into our own operations wherever possible and increase youth engagement in providing solutions to issues of climate change and environmental sustainability.
The challenge will see students come up with well-developed ideas that aim at reducing or solving society’s environmental footprint, environmental challenges of Climate change, Poor waste disposal and management, Deforestation, Ecosystem degradation and destruction
Other activities include; The futuristic news bulletin- Uganda in 30 years’ time, where pupils from identified primary schools will read the mock bulletin on radio painting a picture of what will happen if we don’t pay attention to climate change issues at hand bu8t also give hope by giving recommendations on what can be done to avert the situation.
WWF also plans to green two Earth Hour recreation centers in at least two municipalities in the albertine region alongside a media campaign where influential people in sports, entertainment, Political, religious and cultural leaders will rally Ugandans to take action against environmental degradation. |
