Earth Hour 2020, Raise your voice against plastics, Raise your voice for nature!

Earth Hour 2020 is here and the countdown to 28th March is on. This year, we are mobilizing millions to raise their voices for nature by adopting the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Refuse slogan against plastics.

The prolific use of plastic in Uganda and world over is staggering. Plastic pollution is a problem because of its long-lasting effects — this petroleum-based, man-made material never fully degrades. According to estimates by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, one plastic bottle takes at least 450 years to break down. Recent research suggests that worldwide, only 9 percent of plastics ever made have been recycled.

We find plastics littered from rivers to streets, ingested by land animals and aquatic species alike. But small lifestyle changes, education and outreach efforts can add up to make a big difference.

WWF is mobilizing Ugandans to let the pearl breath in the first ever public demonstration against plastics. According to WWF’s Head of communications in Uganda, the message is very clear, if you must use plastics, ensure that you Reduce, Reuse or Recycle, but most importantly, Refuse to use plastics.

“We are also rallying Ugandans to not only just raise the voices for nature but show commitment to nature by making a pledge to end plastic pollution”.
