Under the same campaign, WWF Uganda has mobilized eight Universities to take part in the University Innovations Challenge against plastic pollution.
The challenge will also increase awareness and information sharing on plastic pollution in the country and hence environmental sustainability.
According to the Energy, Climate and Extractives Coordinator at the Uganda office, Yonnah Turinayo, the students are expected to present mature and well-thought-out innovations all tailored to address Uganda’s chocking plastic pollution.
“We expect the young minds to come up with Well-developed holistic, cost-effective and sustainable ideas/innovations that aim at Re-using, Recycling and Reducing plastics,” he said.
On their part, the students are overly excited and expectant. More exciting to them is the fact that the Kampala Capital City Authority has already committed to adopt and roll out at scale the best innovations that will address the plastic pollution challenge in the city.
According to Junior Ampumuza of Kyambogo University, students are gearing up to work out innovations that will not only guarantee environmental sustainability but also employment in the very difficult job market in the country.
