COP27; WWF Uganda Calls for Commitment on Climate Change Mitigation

WWF Uganda together with the government of Uganda are calling for more commitments by different parties towards measures and interventions to mitigate climate change issues as COP27 happens.

According to WWF Uganda’s Ag Country Director, Simon Peter Weredwong, who led the WWF delegation to Egypt, limiting global warming to well below 2oC while working hard to keep the 1.5o C target alive requires bold and immediate actions and raising ambition from all Parties.

“The 27th session of the COP (COP 27) should be a moment for countries to fulfill their pledges and commitments towards delivering the objectives of the Paris Agreement to enhance the implementation of the Convention,” he said.

Weredwong added that this year should witness the implementation of the Glasgow Climate Pact call to review ambition in NDCs, and create a work program for ambition on mitigation.

Minister for water and environment Beatrice Anywar asked the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to consider funding the Kampala ministerial declaration that seeks to deal with the harsh impact of climate change in East and Horn of Africa.

"In Uganda, we look at mobility in two perspectives. Human forced mobility due to politics, and human forced mobility due to climate change and that is migration. We need to put money into such an intervention. UNFCCC has to put it on the agenda so that migration has an alternative source of livelihood to calm it down and we are involving them as fellow human beings not as a problem to countries,” Minister Anywar said.

In the run-up to COP 27, Uganda negotiators participated in various meetings under the UNFCCC process, including the June 2022 informal consultations of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

During Cop27, Uganda seeks to negotiate on various thematic areas of; Mitigation, Adaptation, means of implementation (finance, technology, and capacity building) plus the cross-cutting issues of gender, and transparency.

Minister Anywar stressed that the Uganda delegation in Sharm el-Sheik is focused to tackle climate change issues of national concern under each of the negotiating streams and the articulation of the issues should deliver benefits to Uganda.
