WWF Uganda Hosts WWF-AB InBev 2024 Partnership Workshop in Mbarara
WWF Uganda brought together sustainability leaders from across Africa for the WWF-AB InBev 2024 Partnership Workshop, held in Mbarara. The workshop, focusing on water stewardship, aimed to evaluate the measurable impacts of collaborative restoration efforts and foster knowledge sharing. Representatives from AB InBev, WWF offices in UK, South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda engaged in discussions about advancing water security and addressing climate change.
While addressing the participants, Ivan Tumuhimbise, WWF Country Director, emphasized the importance of learning from successful restoration projects and working closely with governments and communities to protect vital water resources. He described the gathering as “a meeting of minds” to address water security challenges in Africa and identify best practices for restoring degraded water bodies.
Highlighting River Rwizi as a source of water for over three million people across 12 districts, Ivan urged communities to cease cultivation along riverbanks to ensure long-term sustainability.
Nile Breweries Managing Director, Adu Rando, underscored the significance of WWF and AB InBev’s partnership in restoring the Rwizi catchment area. He reiterated their shared goal of ensuring that communities in water-stressed regions experience measurable improvements in clean water access, vital for thriving livelihoods and ecosystems.
Mbarara City Resident City Commissioner, Robert Kanusu, praised WWF Uganda’s environmental sustainability efforts and called for intensified community sensitization. He stressed the connection between natural resource conservation and social security, urging communities to adopt sustainable practices to protect water bodies and mitigate environmental degradation.
The workshop not only reinforced the commitment to protecting Africa’s water resources but also served as a platform for sharing solutions to challenges affecting both humanity and nature. Through partnerships like these, WWF Uganda continues to champion environmental sustainability and water security across the continent.
