WWF Hosts Danish Ambassador to Uganda
WWF Uganda under the Green Schools Project hosted H.E. Signe Winding Albjerg, the Danish Ambassador of Uganda, along with Ugandan-Danish comedian Melvin Kakooza, officials from the Danish Embassy in Uganda and colleagues from WWF Denmark.
At the school, local leaders and community members highlighted the severe impacts of climate change affecting the area, particularly landslides and river flooding, which have caused loss of lives and property. These events also disrupt children’s education, as roads and bridges are often destroyed or blocked, making access to school difficult.
During an interactive session with the Nature Club members, the visitors learned about the school’s wide-ranging environmental initiatives, including woodlot establishment, kitchen gardens, boundary planting, poetry, songwriting, skits, plays and environmental article writing.
One student, Courage, stood out as an exemplary change agent. The team followed him to his home, where he has applied his Nature Club knowledge by establishing a small kitchen garden, cultivating vegetables like onions, cabbages, tomatoes, and amaranth greens. Courage's parents have been supportive of his efforts, and he has inspired his friends to set up similar gardens at their homes. The officials visited two other homes to witness firsthand the ripple effect of his efforts.
As a tribute to his initiative, Courage was crowned and declared the Green Schools Project Champion.
Ambassador Albjerg and Melvin Kakooza also participated in planting bamboo along the banks of River Yerya, which runs close to the school. This gesture symbolizes their commitment to restoring riverbanks and mitigating future floods to ensure uninterrupted school access for children in the area.
